turn turn turn

Well I sit down to write a post on my topic having a few thoughts bouncing in my head and I only see one response to my topic. A response from a person with whom I've never had an actual conversation with. While that in itself fills me with.. hmmm joy.. no that's not right... ah! satisfaction. Yes it gives me some satisfaction. I see the empty responses I'd hoped from others. Hoped perhaps more than I should. I know everyone has busy lives and sometimes the muse just doesn't strike(Especially when the topic is as.. odd as this). So now I feel like a turn of the screw has been made on this little project.

Nevertheless I shall continue on with my words and my offer for people to join in on this merry little ride. So... to the topic... A screw. What is it? It is a device once used to pull water from areas of digging in an ingenous way that Archimedes invented. It is a small piece of metal which firmly holds two seperate pieces of whatever together. It is also a word used as a vulgarity. It's a noun and a verb and dependent on how you end it a descriptor as well. What an odd language english truly is. I won't go on about that... George Carlin did that bit to death I think.

I am often without a powerdrill so when I'm faced with having to use a screw to screw something in. I find I may be screwed depending on how screwy the design of whatever screwed up thing I'm putting together. See.. see!

This post did not at all come out how I envisioned. Ah well thats kinda the point of this exercise. Anyhow Adieu until next time fair readers.

He wondered as he nailed the coffin shut why they always used nails over screws. Screws would be easier, quicker. But Tucker had used nails on her coffin so he gave him the same treatment. He could still see the man, eyes bleary with exhaustion and tears as he nailed the box shut. It was a box really. A box with a fancy name.
Bastion's eyes were not exhausted this death had been much quicker, over in a matter of minutes not days. But his mother had been bleeding to death as opposed to whatever had taken Tucker. They had sitting there eating dinner as usual when the man had simply laid his head down on the table and stopped breathing.
He really should have used screws. A symbol for the quickness of this death.

Neji's is cute, but I don't see any truth in it. For as long as we have history, humans have always looked back on the time past and regretted not being able to go back. We get poetic and nostalgic about the good old days, the golden years, the times when everything was greener and the sun brighter. And it's bullshit.

It is true that things start out as luxuries and then become necessities. Once upon a time, proper sanitation was a luxury. School was a luxury. Medicine, nutritious food, glasses, dental care, freedom. These were all luxuries for a great part of the population at one time, and still are luxuries for some people. But the world changes, people come up with ways to bring these fancy things to more and more people. Our lives are constantly being improved.

Are we getting lazy? Probably. I mean, once upon a time, in the good old days, people might get sick and the doctor would have to walk to their home from miles away to take care of them. Now people are so lazy they use ambulances.

How many people get around without cars? In Seattle, there were over 99 million boardings on our buses. With the new trains that they're building, the train transit system expects to have 600 thousand boardings in 2006. Couldn't find statistics on how many people walk or bike to work, but I certainly do. A couple of miles each way. I don't own a car.

I could say more, but now I'm hungry. I am definately a slave to food (it seems I'm using the word correctly based on the context of Neji's post). I would have replied to Neji's actual topic, but she's got a friend's only blog, and I'm not signing up for another blog place.

I have a LJ account simply so that I can post commentary.. nothing goes in the space... but yeah.

The golden age we look back at. Hmmmm I don't know its. Yes people have gotten very lazy. It's not everyone. But this -is- the age of convienence. Good or bad its here and we'll have to adapt or figure out new ways to motivate people.

SHE!!! I AM NO SHE!!! (Geesh!)
As for your comment, I know very well that tech advances, for the most part, good. I am a HUGE advocate of technology. But some people take it a bit too far.
An actual example:
"Oh, sorry that I couldn't get to work yesterday, Neji, but my car broke down."
"Well, I am sorry to hear that, but don't you only live three blocks away?"
"...yeah, and?"
This is an actual conversation I had with a coworker once. Now, my car broke down and I couldn't get to school, but I live 35 miles away from the college I go to, most of that terrain being mountainous. This person lived three easy, level, paved blocks away, and yet couldn't walk it.
And comparing things like sanitation and medicine (and food) to things that actually don't affect our life spans that much one way or the other is a bit childish, don't you think?
Oh, Drathari, I will get on the next topic soon, but I have some pressing issues right now. Expect my post around Monday.

As long as the topic is in before the next week I really don't mind.. heck even a little late is cool. I'm not a stern school teacher with a ruler ready to rap your knuckles and all that jazz

Did I say 'she'? Sorry, I was trying to be gender neutral, but when I don't know who I'm talking about or to, I tend to start thinking that I'm talking to myself.

I wasn't talking about life span, I was talking about quality of life. People can live a long time without dental care, but they'll be ninety years old and have no teeth. Just because they can survive with no teeth, doesn't mean that they should. Just because something isn't essential to survival doesn't mean its unecessary. Internet access also isn't essential, but does that mean that we shouldn't have it? I can use the internet to keep in touch with family, so share my ideas and art with other people, to increase my knowlege and understanding. It's been used to raise money for worthy causes, probably with greater success than other methods because it can reach a wider audience and it makes clicking on a button to donate to disaster relief or children hospitals so damn easy.

It also gets me lots and lots of porn.

Can I live without the internet? Of course. I only have it because I can afford it. It's easy to afford at this point. Do I need to? Have Has it reduced my quality of living? Am I a slave to it? No, that's bullshit. I don't sit in front of the computer all day and night because I'm addicted and can't pull myself away. I use it when I want something, then I go do something else. I use it for entertainment if I'm in the mood for some online games or reading interesting articles, and then when I'm not I go read a book or take a walk or do any number of other things that aren't related to my computer (except that maybe I ordered the book on Amazon because I couldn't find it at any of the numerous bookstores in my area).

This, of course, is only an example of one kind of technology that you seem to think is hurting us instead of helping us. If someone really feels like they're a slave to their technology, then they need to evaluate their life and their values. They need to look at what is causing them so much disatisfaction or having a negative impact on their lives and change it. I'm not saying people can't be harmed by the things you're talking about. People get addicted and what should be good can become unhealthy. The person who won't walk three blocks is obviously abusing their car. But does that have anything to do with the car itself, or with the person?
